In the rolling heartland of Missouri, education is more than a tradition; it is a shared commitment that brings families, teachers, and neighbors together. Across generations, the schools of Pettis County have stood as cornerstones of their communities, shaping young minds while reflecting the values of hard work and integrity that define the region. Out of this spirit of collaboration, the Pettis County R-V School District was formed in 1964, when the Longwood, Postal, Houstonia, Hughesville, and Cartwright districts came together to create something stronger and more unified.
Since then, the district has remained steadfast in its belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. Its vision is to cultivate an exemplary school environment that inspires excellence, fosters mutual respect, and builds personal responsibility. Guided by this purpose, Pettis County R-V empowers each student to become a productive, confident citizen through engaging instruction in a safe and caring setting. Here, learning is both personal and purposeful, and every success story reflects a community that continues to invest in its greatest resource, its children.
A Close-Knit Community of Learners
The Pettis County R-V School District serves 325 students who learn and grow together in a supportive, family-centered environment. Students in preschool through sixth grade attend Northwest Elementary in Houstonia, where curiosity and foundational skills take root.
From seventh through twelfth grade, students continue their journey at Northwest High School in Hughesville, where they build knowledge, confidence, and character. Though small in size, the district’s strength lies in its close community and personalized approach to education. Every student is known, encouraged, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential in both academics and personal growth.
Expanding Opportunities for Every Student
Pettis County R-V ensures that students have access to a wide range of learning opportunities that prepare them for the future. Through partnerships with several colleges and universities, students can earn dual credit while still in high school. They also have access to online courses through LAUNCH and hands-on Career and Technical Education programs with State Fair Community College.

Throughout the year, the district hosts community dinners and breakfasts that bring families, staff, and neighbors together in celebration and connection. This partnership reflects the district’s belief that education thrives best when schools and communities work hand in hand for the benefit of every child.
