There is a particular kind of patience required to run a school district for more than a century and a half: the patience of watching generations of families walk through the same doors their grandparents once did, and somehow keeping that door relevant to a world that keeps changing shape. In Lapeer County, Michigan, that patience has a name: North Branch Area Schools, a district founded in 1856 with a long history of adapting to the changing needs of its students and community.

What began as a traditional rural learning center has become something else entirely: a modern, centralized campus serving roughly 2,350 students. The transformation did not happen overnight. It evolved through a continued commitment to preserving tradition while embracing innovation, with state-of-the-art facilities, advanced instructional technology, and expanded career and technical education opportunities.

A Campus Built for Everyone

North Branch today consists of four distinct schools, each serving a different phase of a student’s educational journey. North Branch Elementary School carries students from Pre-K

through fourth grade. Ruth Fox Middle School serves grades five through eight. North Branch High School covers grades nine through twelve. Quest High School provides an alternative educational pathway for students in grades ten through twelve.

The district serves the rural and suburban families of North Branch Township, and Michigan’s Schools of Choice program also reaches families across Lapeer, Genesee, and Sanilac counties.

What Gets Taught, and Why It Matters

Academically, the district builds its curriculum progressively. At the elementary level, the focus is foundational, with literacy and numeracy taught through evidence-based Tier 1 instruction, interventions tailored to students’ needs, early STEM integration, and social-emotional learning.

Middle school introduces exploratory electives alongside core academic rigor, including STEM learning, fine arts, band, and accelerated literacy and math pathways, giving students opportunities to explore interests while strengthening their academic foundation.

By high school, the offerings widen considerably: Advanced Placement courses, early college opportunities, dual enrollment with local colleges, and Career and Technical Education programs in agriculture, health sciences, and trade skills. The result is a broad range of options for students pursuing different post-secondary pathways.

Defining Excellence on Their Own Terms

Ask the district what excellence means, and the answer is not about test scores alone. It

is defined as achieving maximum growth for every student, academically, socially, and emotionally, within a safe and supportive environment. The strategic goals that follow from that definition are concrete: improving standardized academic performance and graduation rates, modernizing campus technology and facility infrastructure, attracting and retaining highly qualified educators, and expanding partnerships that enhance career pathways for students.

As artificial intelligence rapidly evolves, the district remains committed to a responsive, human-centered approach for both staff and students. By pairing teacher-led collaborative inquiry with student-friendly AI guidance scales, the district equips both staff and students to evaluate why and when emerging technologies should be used to deepen learning – ensuring technology accelerates student thinking without replacing it.

Meeting Every Student Where They Are

North Branch uses a Multi-Tiered System of Supports, known as MTSS, to deliver instruction tailored to each student’s learning profile. Differentiated instruction, co-teaching models, and small-group interventions are used to support academic growth across abilities.

Staff also participate in ongoing professional development focused on inclusive instructional practices, trauma-informed teaching, and creating an environment where every student feels valued.

A District That Leans on Its Community

Community collaboration is an important part of the district’s approach. North Branch maintains communication through regular updates, parent-teacher organizations, and advisory councils. Local businesses support Career and Technical Education and work-based learning initiatives by providing internships, mentorships, and hands-on site visits. Civic organizations and local emergency services also contribute to safety initiatives, youth activities, and campus development projects.

Life Beyond the Classroom

The district’s athletic teams compete under a name that carries local pride: the Broncos, fielding varsity, junior varsity, and middle school squads. Beyond athletics, students can participate in championship-caliber band and fine arts programs, Esports, robotics, student council, National Honor Society, and various special-interest clubs that promote leadership and teamwork.

The Structure Behind the Schools

Behind the district’s daily operation is a leadership structure designed to keep its schools running effectively. The Superintendent and Business Office provide financial oversight and policy governance. Building Principals provide direct instructional leadership, student support, and daily operations. The Curriculum Director and instructional coaches ensure alignment with state standards and oversee professional development. Operations, Technology, and Transportation teams maintain the learning environment and provide daily transportation.

Closing the Gaps That Matter Most

At North Branch, equity means delivering high-quality Tier 1 instruction rooted in strong relationships and student belonging, while actively removing the financial and logistical barriers that limit student opportunity. The district provides 1:1 student device access, free and reduced meals, specialized special education resources, and alternative pathways such as Quest High School. These measures are intended to ensure that students have access to the support and resources they need to earn a diploma and succeed.

Preparing Students for What Comes After

Support extends beyond the classroom and into post-secondary planning. Counseling

services cover academic advising, mental health support, and college and career planning. Students benefit from career fairs, college visits, financial aid workshops, and job-shadowing programs. Partnerships with regional educational service agencies also connect students with trade unions, university representatives, and corporate recruiters.

Looking Toward What Comes Next

Looking ahead, NBAS plans to expand Career and Technical Education facilities and STEM learning spaces to meet evolving workforce demands, particularly in agriculture. The district also plans to enhance early college degree pathways, upgrade safety technology across campus, and maintain and improve its state-of-the-art facilities.

A Message From the Top

At the head of it all is Superintendent James D. Fish, whose leadership reflects a student-first philosophy grounded in integrity, accountability, and community pride. His message to current and prospective students and families reflects the district’s emphasis on partnership, belonging, and preparation for the future.
