The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has become the first university in Alabama to join the Association of American Universities (AAU), a group of leading research universities in the United States and Canada. UAB joins the Association of American Universities as one of two universities selected for membership in October 2026, marking recognition of its growing contributions to research, education, and innovation. UAB accepted the invitation on October 29, 2026, becoming Alabama’s first and only AAU member and bringing the association’s membership to 73 universities.
UAB joins the Association of American Universities, expanding its research activities considerably over the past decade, with annual research expenditures rising from $379 million in 2013 to more than $915 million. This growth reflects UAB’s increasing research capacity and strengthens its position among leading research institutions.
Membership and Selection Criteria for UAB’s entry into the Association of American Universities
The Association of American Universities (AAU) selects new members through an invitation-based process that evaluates universities’ research, scholarship, and educational achievements. Founded in 1900, the AAU represents research-intensive universities across the United States and Canada. Its selection process uses quantitative indicators to assess the breadth and quality of these areas.
The UAB joins the Association of American Universities following this evaluation, alongside Georgetown University. The AAU last added new members in 2023, and this October 2026 expansion brings its total membership to 73 institutions, including 71 universities in the United States and two in Canada.
UAB’s Research and Academic Achievements Behind Its AAU Membership
UAB joins the Association of American Universities with its growing research achievements and academic excellence strengthening its case for membership. The university’s annual research expenditures have increased from $379 million in 2013, when Ray L. Watts became president, to more than $915 million.
UAB’s research strength is also reflected in its National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding rankings, according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research:
| UAB school | National rank |
| School of Health Professions | No. 9 |
| School of Nursing | No. 11 |
| School of Dentistry | No. 15 |
| Heersink School of Medicine | No. 28 |
Additionally, 12 departments and divisions within the Heersink School of Medicine rank among the top 25 nationally.
Beyond research, UAB offers more than 180 academic programs across undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, professional, and online education. These achievements reflect the university’s research capacity and academic breadth, two areas considered in the AAU’s membership evaluation.
How UAB’s AAU Membership Strengthens Alabama’s Research Profile
UAB’s entry into the Association of American Universities gives Alabama its first representation in the research-focused association. The recognition places the university alongside institutions such as Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Chicago.
AAU member universities collectively receive the majority of competitively awarded federal research funding. Their work contributes to scientific discoveries, public health research, technological innovation, and undergraduate and graduate education.
For Alabama, having its first AAU member represents recognition of the state’s growing research presence in higher education. UAB’s membership also connects the institution with a network of universities that contribute to research, scholarship, and innovation across North America.
A New Chapter for UAB and Alabama Higher Education
As UAB joins the Association of American Universities, its selection highlights the university’s growing influence in American higher education and brings Alabama into a network of leading research institutions. The membership recognizes UAB’s contributions to research, education, and innovation and places it among leading research institutions in the United States and Canada. For Alabama, this achievement brings its first representation in an association that includes some of North America’s most prominent research universities. It also highlights UAB’s growing role in advancing scientific discovery, strengthening academic programs, and creating new opportunities for research and education. The recognition marks an important step in the university’s continued development and its contribution to higher education.
