Every school district carries a story, one shaped by the people who believe deeply in education’s ability to change lives. In Columbus, Nebraska, that story continues through the leadership of Dr. Chip Kay, an educator whose 34-year journey speaks to perseverance, mentorship, and purpose. His career has been guided by the steady hands of those who believed in him and encouraged him to grow, and in return, he has devoted his life to helping others do the same.
Dr. Kay’s path began in the classroom, where he taught business and technology while coaching football, baseball, and wrestling. Those early years taught him that education is not just about lessons and grades but about relationships, teamwork, and character. Over time, his curiosity and drive led him toward administration, where his influence could reach further. He served as superintendent of Shelby-Rising City from 2013 to 2020 before joining Columbus Public Schools as director of finance and human resources.
In 2024, he took on the role of superintendent, bringing with him a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a vision rooted in experience, empathy, and unwavering commitment to students and staff alike.
A Leader Focused on People, Progress, and Purpose
As superintendent of Columbus Public Schools, Dr. Kay leads with both strategy and heart. He oversees the district’s vision, manages fiscal planning, and ensures that every policy from the Board of Education translates into meaningful action for students and staff. “My role is to make sure every decision centers on student success,” he says.
Among his proudest achievements are developing sustainable funding models that lessen dependence on property taxes and strengthening instructional frameworks that elevate teaching and learning. He also credits his team for creating a collaborative culture that supports every learner through innovation and collaboration.
Driving Innovation and Engagement Across the District
Since stepping into the role of superintendent, Dr. Kay has focused on transforming learning through structure, support, and student voice. He introduced the Leader in Me and 4DX frameworks from Franklin Covey, giving teachers consistent methods for instruction while encouraging creativity in the classroom. “It’s about helping teachers lead with purpose,” he explains.
The district also strengthened its Multi-Tiered Systems of Support to ensure every student receives personalized attention. Expanding career and technical education, enhancing data-driven interventions, and amplifying participation through advisory councils have all deepened engagement and positioned Columbus Public Schools for long-term success.
A Vision Shaped by Purpose and Progress
Dr. Kay envisions a district where every student thrives academically, emotionally, and personally. His strategic vision for 2026 and beyond centers on five core goals that reflect both ambition and care. “Our Wildly Important Goal is to increase student literacy proficiency,” he shares, emphasizing high-quality instruction and closing achievement gaps. Equally vital is preparing students with future-ready skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and adaptability.
Dr. Kay also prioritizes whole child development, modern infrastructure, and stronger workforce connections through dual credit and apprenticeship programs, ensuring Columbus Public Schools graduates are confident, capable, and ready for what comes next.
Building Equity Through Access and Action
For Dr. Chip Kay, equity is not a concept; it is daily practice. He ensures that every student has the same opportunity to learn and succeed. “True equity means meeting students where they are and giving them what they need to thrive,” he says.
The district relies on detailed data analysis to identify gaps and uses needs-based funding to direct resources to where they have the greatest impact. From expanding access to advanced coursework and extracurriculars to offering multilingual communication, Dr. Kay’s approach keeps opportunity at the forefront.
Creating a Culture Where Everyone Belongs
At Columbus Public Schools collaboration and engagement are part of the district’s fabric. Dr. Kay believes that belonging begins with respect. “We’ve built a culture where every student, family, and staff member feels valued,” he explains.
The district employs bilingual liaisons and counselors to meet the needs of its diverse student body and works closely with families from all backgrounds, adapting communication to honor cultural differences. Annual climate surveys help ensure every voice is heard, while heritage events and celebrations strengthen a sense of unity across the community.
Lessons in Leadership and Resilience
Throughout his career, Dr. Kay has faced moments that tested his patience, perspective, and persistence. One of the biggest hurdles was resistance to change. “I realized early on that people need to understand the reason behind change before they can embrace it,” he says. By listening, involving staff, and celebrating small victories, he turned skepticism into shared ownership.
Balancing competing priorities was another challenge, one he met by aligning every decision with clear strategic goals.
Reimagining Education Without Limits
If resources were no obstacle, Dr. Kay would redesign public education around personalization, support, and opportunity. “Every student deserves an experience built around their strengths and passions,” he says. His vision begins with smaller class sizes and individualized learning plans, guided by teachers and technology working hand in hand.
He imagines schools rich in mental health support, early childhood programs, and modern spaces that spark creativity. Teachers would receive continuous professional growth and fair compensation, while robust partnerships would strengthen the educator pipeline. In Dr. Kay’s view, true transformation means giving every child a chance to flourish.
Building for the Future
Looking ahead, Dr. Kay is energized by the district’s growth and the projects that will shape its next chapter. “Seeing new facilities rise that will serve generations of students is deeply rewarding,” he shares.
He is particularly excited about the upcoming Non-Traditional Learning and Support Center, which will expand programs and community services. At the same time, he continues to strengthen career pathway programs in healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and construction trades, helping students step confidently into rewarding careers.
Finding Balance Beyond the Office
For Dr. Kay, balance begins with trust. He credits his leadership team for allowing him to delegate confidently and focus on what matters most. “Empowering others keeps our organization strong and sustainable,” he says.
Outside of work, he focuses on renewal and spending time with family and grandchildren. He stays active through early morning workouts, golf, and weekend activities, which help him maintain physical and mental strength, ensuring he leads with clarity and energy.
A Life Rooted in Service and Community
For Dr. Chip Kay, leadership extends far beyond the walls of his office. He remains deeply connected to the community through his work with organizations such as the United Way and Rotary, where service gives him a fresh perspective and gratitude. “These experiences remind me why I love this state and this community,” he says. Whether fishing, boating, or cheering for the Columbus Discoverers, he values balance and renewal. Above all, he considers it an honor to serve and uplift others every day.
