Every educator has a moment when the work becomes more than a job. For Dr. Ron Lilie, that moment arrived early, in a setting most people would find difficult. Long before he became Superintendent of Waelder Independent School District, he was learning what real support looks like by standing beside students who needed calm direction, steady guidance, and a patient voice. Those experiences gave him a view of education that cannot be taught in a lecture hall.

He once thought he would teach English, but his degree in psychology kept pointing him toward special education. That interest became action when he stepped into a life skills and behavioral unit as a paraprofessional. The days were unpredictable, yet they revealed the heart of the work. “That first job changed how I looked at learning and behavior. It showed me the layers each student carries,” he says.

From that point on, he followed a path built around understanding students more deeply. He became a special education teacher who looked for progress in small steps. He moved into the role of educational diagnostician, then took on post-secondary planning for students preparing for life after school. Nearly a decade as a principal followed, giving him a wider view of how a campus works. Today, he leads Waelder ISD with the insight of someone who has lived every level of the system.

Leading a Small District with Wide-Ranging Responsibility

In a district the size of Waelder, leadership stretches beyond a single job title. Dr. Lilie oversees finances, campus needs, and long-term planning, but he also works closely with staff to create new paths for growth. He often steps into roles that would be separate positions in larger systems, which gives him a clear view of what each department needs.

He counts several achievements as meaningful, including improving facilities without relying on a bond and expanding AP and dual-credit options. These efforts helped the district earn its Early College High School designation. For him, nothing matches the pride of watching graduates succeed.

Shaping Academic Growth Through Intentional Choices

As Superintendent, Dr. Lilie focuses on building a team that supports strong instruction. He believes improvement starts with placing the right people in the right roles, even when those decisions require difficult conversations. He has strengthened the curriculum, expanded programs through grant funding, and added courses that keep students curious and involved in their learning.

These changes aim to create a school environment where students stay engaged and teachers feel supported. He also understands that not everyone fits the needs of a small, mission-driven district. For him, academic growth depends on a team that works with a shared purpose.

A Forward Vision Built on Support and Consistent Growth

Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, Dr. Lilie aims to strengthen the people who power the district’s success. He wants staff to feel valued, supported, and equipped with the tools they need to help students thrive. His vision includes maintaining the strong academic gains the district achieved this past year and pushing that progress even further.

Dr. Lilie plans to do this through steady collaboration, proper use of the district’s adopted curriculum, and ongoing checks of student data throughout the year. For him, success comes from adjusting instruction when needed and making sure every decision reflects what students truly need.

Creating Fair Access through Strong, Responsive Leadership

Equity in Waelder ISD begins with the people who lead its programs each day. Dr. Lilie relies on a team that understands student needs and brings forward ideas grounded in clear reasoning. When a leader presents a concern or a request, he directs resources to the places where they will make the greatest impact.

Dr. Lilie describes his central office staff, campus administrators, and program directors as a high-performing group committed to serving every demographic. Their vigilance helps ensure that students receive the opportunities and support they need, no matter their background or circumstances.

Measuring Progress Through Individual Growth

To understand how students are learning, Dr. Lilie begins each year by assessing where every student stands before instruction starts. He avoids a one-size-fits-all approach and instead uses that data to guide lesson planning. Teachers work with a shared curriculum and common academic language so they can target specific areas of need.

Throughout the year, periodic assessments help the district track progress and adjust instruction when necessary. For Dr. Lilie, the most important indicator is not how students compare to others but whether each student is growing. He believes real success is measured by steady personal improvement.

Facing Setbacks with Clarity and Persistence

Dr. Lilie often says he enjoys being a superintendent, though some days test that belief. One of his most challenging moments came when the district attempted to pass a bond, and the effort failed. The setback made him question whether he had communicated the district’s needs clearly enough and whether the community fully understood how the bond was tied to student success.

Instead of stopping there, Dr. Lilie looked for another way forward. He eventually found a solution that did not require a bond yet still delivered key improvements, including a new cafeteria and remodeled classroom spaces. The experience strengthened his resolve and his approach to problem-solving.

Reimagining Public Education with Full Support for People and Places

If resources were not a limitation, Dr. Lilie would begin by strengthening the people who give life to public education. He believes fair compensation is essential for keeping skilled educators in the profession. From there, he would focus on the conditions that shape daily learning. He envisions schools with permanent, well-equipped classrooms, reliable buses and vehicles, and enough staff to prevent the long hours that often strain small districts.

He would also build programs with every component needed to prepare students for life after graduation. For him, true transformation starts with giving educators and students what they deserve.

Looking Ahead to a Stronger Future for Students

Dr. Lilie plans to remain with Waelder ISD through retirement, continuing the work he has shaped over more than thirteen years. He is proud of the district’s progress but sees room for further growth. His long-term goal is to help students graduate not only with a diploma but also with a college degree or certification. He hopes to build pathways that give every student a stronger start in life.

Finding Balance Through Work, Nature, and Learning

Dr. Lilie admits he has not fully mastered work-life balance, largely because he grew up with a strong drive to stay busy. Outside his role as superintendent, he raises beef cattle, which he finds calming and rewarding. He also enjoys hunting and fishing, and he keeps up with current educational and psychological research. These interests give him space to reset while staying connected to what he values most.

A Guiding Principle Centered on Honesty and Care

Dr. Ron Lilie carries a simple message: never give up on a student. He believes every child can grow when given steady support. His philosophy also centers on honesty. If a reward is promised, it must be delivered. If a consequence is given, it must be upheld. For him, leadership means consistency, integrity, and genuine care. Above all, he believes students should always feel valued and loved.

Quote

Dr. Ron Lilie

“Never be dishonest with students, meaning, if it is a reward, produce it as you promised. If it is a consequence, produce that also, as promised. And always love them.”
