Researchers Discover the Perfect Shape of the Egg. How is this useful for evolution?

The Perfect Shape

The egg shape is often called the “perfect shape”. It is big enough to incubate an embryo, and still, make its way out of the body easily. Over the years, there was quite a lot of research and analysis by mathematicians, engineers, and biologists to develop a universal mathematical formula for egg shape.

Recently, this mathematical formula was discovered by researchers from The University of Kent, The Research Institute for Environment Treatment, and Vita-Market Ltd. The formula can be used to identify and analyze any bird’s egg on this planet. It proposes to be very useful to understand the shape of the egg as well as its evolution that contributes to various biological and technological applications all over.

Analysis & Parameters 

Eggs of different species vary in shape and size. To derive the formula, analysis of all the types of eggs was performed using four geometric figures: sphere, ellipsoid, ovoid, and pyriform (conical). Among all these figures, the mathematical formula for the pyriform was still not derived. To overcome this challenge, the researchers used an additional function in the ovoid formula to conclude the geometric shape comprising the last stage of the evolution of sphere-ellipsoid. This applies to all kinds of egg geometry.

Application of the Egg Formula

The main intention of identifying the egg formula is the biological and technological application for various purposes. It contributes to the research of evolutionary biology. The mathematical descriptions of all basic egg shaped have already been proved very useful in food research, mechanical engineering, agriculture, biosciences, architecture, and aeronautics. For example, if this formula is applied to the engineering construction of thin-walled vessels in an egg shape, instead of a spherical one, it will provide much stronger support.

Various researchers and professors have great opinions on the application of this formula.

“Biological evolutionary processes such as egg formation must be investigated for mathematical description as a basis for research in evolutionary biology, as demonstrated with this formula. This universal formula can be applied across fundamental disciplines, especially the food and poultry industry, and will serve as an impetus for further investigations inspired by the egg as a research object,” says – Darren Griffin (Professor of Genetics in the University of Kent and PI on the research).

  • This formula can be used to design engineering systems and state-of-the-art technologies. ‘The London City Hall’s roof and ‘The Gherkin’ have been constructed using the same formula that provides maximum loads and minimum usage of materials and resources.
