People using mobiles don’t leave funnels due to disinterest. They leave because they encounter a distraction between the moment they decide to engage and the actual engagement. And for most websites that’s even harder, the transition window! This is where interstitial ads can help maintain a funnel if they are employed properly.
What the transition phase actually is
According to Google’s “micro-moments” framework, our behaviors as consumers on mobile create split-second windows when we desire to know, go, do, or buy something immediately. The transition phase is the interval between one of those ads, apps, or articles you used to open the product (the “I’m interested enough to tap!” moment) and the user responding to your next screen (“Let’s sign up for this” or “I’ll add this to my cart”).
It’s an incredibly brief chunk of time: usually less than ten seconds. The user has just expressed intent, hopefully the strongest intent possible, for you to push them straight into the next phase of the funnel… however, several whole other product alternatives are just a thumb swipe away on this very same device they’re holding, exactly 6.41 apps currently running. Or at 1.69 notifications swiping through that bar at the top of the screen. Or on the 1.41 thumb swiping back to the home screen.
Why mobile funnels need their own architecture
Desktop funnels allow for some friction as users have more tolerance. For instance, a desktop user can open two tabs, read a blog, and still decide to buy five minutes later. Conversely, on mobile, decision making is almost instant.
The amount of real estate is minimal: the smaller the screen, the less reassurance or context you can display without scrolling. The smaller the decision window, the easier it is to lose attention. The smaller the entry point, the easier it is to click back. This is why mobile pages need big fonts, minimalist design, short copy that gets straight to the point, and irresistible CTA buttons.
As a vendor on touch devices, you’re specifically looking to engineer the ringing of a cash register on a device that’s designed to close tabs. Step-to-step abandonment runs proportionally higher than on desktop, and each additional tap is a fresh opportunity to bail and hit back.
Why interstitials are the strongest bridge – when they’re used right
Full-screen interstitial ads provide the greatest visibility of any unit on mobile. They fill the entire screen, they can’t be scrolled past by accident, and the user must look at them for at least a moment before they do anything. This makes them the most effective tool you have for making sure a user’s attention has transferred from your app to an advertisement. And the simplest thing to get wrong.
The entire difference between an interstitial that helps and one that drives an uninstall is when it appears. An interstitial that appears as the app is opening, before the user has started interacting, is an ad-intercept. The user reads it as an obstacle and subconsciously resents it. An interstitial that appears after a completed action – after reading a part of an article, after failing at a level, after adding an item to a cart – is a natural break. The user has stopped already. You’re not stopping them; you’re using dead time.

Placement and frequency rules that hold up in practice
Once you understand that the timing of an ad matters more than the ad itself, the other aspects fall into place.
First off, you need to cap the frequency at one to two interstitials per session. Any more than that and you’re sacrificing short-term impressions for long-term churn. Mobile users uninstall or leave one-star reviews because of too many ads more often than any other reason; you always want to reach your users without overstepping their tolerance. Include a visible, easy-to-reach close button on your interstitial. It may be tempting to hide or delay the skip option to keep the user’s attention for just a couple seconds longer, but this almost always has a severe negative impact on your metrics. Users feel trapped and alienated, and that’s the last thing you want.
This is where format selection and execution start to matter as much as strategy. Well-built interstitial ad strategies treat placement, timing, and frequency as a single system rather than three separate settings, which is the difference between an interstitial that supports the funnel and one that just adds noise to it.
CTR is not the metric that matters
Many teams focus on optimizing interstitials to increase click-through rates, and they consider it a success once that number starts to rise. However, it is a flawed approach. An interstitial ad with a high click-through rate that fails to progress users to the next step of the funnel is not performing well, despite what the dashboard may indicate.
The key performance indicator to consider is the completion rate of the next step. For instance, if your interstitial is triggered by a cart addition, you should track how many of those users complete the checkout process, rather than how many clicked on the ad. In the case of an article-triggered interstitial, you should track the return visits or newsletter signups, and not just the clicks. Click-through rate measures the level of engagement with the ad, while conversion rate measures the effectiveness of the funnel. These are distinct aspects, and conflating them is how some teams make the mistake of expanding an ad unit that is causing a revenue loss downstream.
Session depth and time-on-screen are also helpful as secondary indicators. If users are clicking on the interstitials but their session depth is decreasing later on, it means that the ad is pushing users away rather than further engaging them.
Speed is part of the funnel, not separate from it
Interstitials are heavy and increase the waiting time of your content. This can matter a lot for user engagement metrics where an ad impression with an immediate bounce or close-back rarely figures well for the brand-side (or the site owner). There’s also a shifting relationship in ad tech in mobile where the half-loaded page situation often isn’t possible (i.e. your site won’t be overriding the ad if it rightfully pushes in to display), so every ad load request can be pretty heavy.
This connects directly to Core Web Vitals. Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift all get worse when heavy ad units load unoptimized. That hurts the user experience and it hurts mobile search visibility, since mobile-first indexing means Google is evaluating the same version of your site that’s struggling to load the interstitial in the first place.
The fix isn’t avoiding interstitials. It’s optimizing them. Compress creative assets aggressively. Lazy-load the ad unit so it doesn’t compete with critical page resources during initial render. Preload only what’s needed for the immediate viewport. None of this is exotic technical work – it’s basic hygiene that a lot of teams skip because the ad platform handles delivery and nobody checks what that delivery costs in milliseconds.
Here’s the thing – if the user can’t successfully reach a point where your tracking can check the viewability, you’re making one of the loudest statistical statements of all – a half-loaded ad unit is equivalent to an ad unit that wasn’t seen. By the stats.
Deep linking keeps the funnel intact after the click
One of the most common ways interstitials sabotage their own funnel is by routing users somewhere generic after the click – a homepage, a category page, an app’s default landing screen. That resets context. The user was three steps into a task and now they’re back at zero, expected to re-navigate to where they were.
Deep linking solves this by routing the post-click destination to the exact point in the funnel the user was already at. If someone added an item to a cart and then saw an interstitial, the destination after interaction should return them to that cart, not to a store front page. If someone was reading an in-app article, the link should return them to that article or the next one in a sequence, not the app’s main screen.
This sounds like a small technical detail. It isn’t. It’s often the single biggest factor separating an interstitial that supports conversion from one that just adds a detour.
Rewarded video and other opt-in formats are worth pairing in here too. Giving users a choice – watch this for a small reward, or skip – reduces the friction of the transition phase even further, because the user feels some agency instead of just tolerating an interruption.
Build a testing cadence, not a one-time setup

All of the above rules are meant as guidelines, they will work on almost any product with typical engagement funnels and audiences, but they need testing and measurement against your specific target. For some apps you might discover that after-action doesn’t work, because your users are already conditioned to expect an interruption there and have begun to pre-skip the whole interstitial. For others, the right spot might be at a regular time interval rather than a funnel step. And so on.
Run A/B tests on one variable at a time. Placement first: does the interstitial perform better after action A or action B. Then creative: which message and visual style holds attention without feeling like a detour. Then copy: what wording on the CTA actually gets tapped versus dismissed. Then the close-button delay itself, since even a half-second difference in how quickly a skip option appears can shift both engagement and irritation.
Pair this with funnel analytics that show you exactly where users leak out, step by step. If drop-off spikes right after the interstitial fires, that’s a placement or frequency problem. If it spikes two steps later, the issue might be the deep-linking destination or a speed problem introduced by the ad payload itself. Treat the transition phase like any other measurable segment of the funnel, because that’s exactly what it is.
The transition phase isn’t a gap to survive. It’s the part of the funnel you can actually design for, and interstitials – placed after action, capped in frequency, fast to load, and linked to preserve context – are one of the few tools built to hold a mobile user’s attention exactly when it’s most likely to slip away.
