The Two Indices Every Banking Sector Trader Should Be Watching Together

Follow Us:

India’s banking sector has a major stake in the country’s stock market. Due to this, banking indices are closely watched by traders and investors. While many market participants focus on a single banking index, analysing more than one can provide a broader understanding of how different segments of the banking industry are performing.

Bank Nifty and BSE BANKEX are two widely followed banking indices in India. These indices track the performance of leading banking stocks from different exchanges and also include different stocks. These two indices can provide you with valuable insights into the banking sector’s performance and overall sentiment.

Understanding Bank Nifty and BSE BANKEX

Bank Nifty is an index that tracks the liquid and large banking stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It is one of the most actively traded indices in the derivatives market of India. It is also widely used by traders for futures and options trading.

BSE BANKEX tracks leading banking companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). It offers another perspective on the banking sector by measuring the performance of selected banking stocks based on the BSE’s index.

Although many large banks are common to both indices, their stock selection criteria, weightings, and calculation methods differ. As a result, their day-to-day performance may not always be identical.

Why comparing both indices matters

You may not get the full story by watching only one index. There are occasions when Bank Nifty shows stronger momentum than BSE BANKEX, while at other times the opposite may happen because of differences in constituent weightage and price movements.

By analysing both indices, traders can determine strengths or weaknesses in the broader banking sector. This broader view can help traders avoid drawing conclusions based on a single benchmark.

What traders can learn from both indices?

If you observe that both the Bank Nifty and BSE BANKEX indices move higher together, it represents strong buying interest and the move is spread across the banking sector and not limited to a few sections. Similarly, if both indices decline together, it may indicate broader selling pressure within banking shares.

But if one index outperforms the other for an extended period, traders may investigate which banks are driving the divergence. By examining this, an additional layer of market insight can be added before selecting individual trading banks, stocks and index-based trading banking stocks.

Using the indices for trading decisions

Many traders analyse the Nifty Bank option chain and BANKEX option chain before entering positions in banking stocks or banking index derivatives. If both indices confirm a bullish trend, it may strengthen confidence in positive sector momentum. Likewise, weakness across both indices may indicate caution.

Traders do not use either index to simply buy or sell, but rather use index analysis together with chart patterns, support and resistance, trading volume and other technical indicators.

Factors that influence banking indices

Both Bank Nifty and BSE BANKEX respond to several economic and market changes. Factors like changes in interest rates, inflation data, sector earnings, credit growth, government policies, and overall market sentiment primarily influence these indices.

The occurrence of global market movements, foreign institutional investor involvement, and significant corporate announcements regarding banking companies can lead to short-term price fluctuations.

Conclusion

Bank Nifty and BSE BANKEX are India’s widely followed banking sector indices. Bank Nifty include the large banks which are listed on the NSE, while BSE BANKEX includes the large banks which are listed on the BSE exchange. Each of them provides valuable insights into India’s banking sector.

Traders usually analyse both indices together to get a broader market perspective. Also, it helps in understanding market sentiment and sector performance.
