Fish & Richardson selects students from underrepresented Areas for space exploration

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths, known as STEM, are getting popular among students these days. And the popularity year over year explains how important this education system is for students. At present, the learning environment created for students is mostly focused on practical knowledge with theoretical applications. STEM wave has taken almost every field away with its storming ability to change the world, including the Space Camp program.

Encouraging young forces for space exploration, Fish & Richardson has awarded full scholarships to 32 students and their teacher chaperones across the country. They are invited to attend the U.S. Space & Rocket Center Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama this summer. The firm has been in training space for more than 21 consecutive years, and the Space Camp Scholarship program has a goal to engage middle school students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Fish launched the Space Camp Scholarship program in 1999 since it sent over 500 students to Space Camp on full scholarships.

The selection process and the benefits

All of the students are from schools in underrepresented areas in the 11 U.S. cities where Fish has offices: Atlanta; Austin; Boston; Dallas; Houston; Minneapolis/St. Paul; New York; San Diego; Silicon Valley; Washington, D.C.; and Wilmington. The scholarship winners are selected by Fish attorneys based on a written application and in-person interviews.

  • The winners receive full tuition, round-trip airfare, and accommodations during the 6 days Space Camp program, experiencing simulated space shuttle missions, participating in programs on space exploration, rocket building and launches, and learning about mission control.
  • The Space Academy curriculum includes cutting-edge training and missions based on current initiatives of both NASA and private sector companies.
  • The training provides students with a platform for personal growth and development, including cultivation of skills in leadership, problem-solving, teamwork and self-confidence.

After the students return from Space Camp, many of them meet with the attorneys from Fish –who encourage them to keep on exploring STEM and to strive for academic excellence – to share their experiences as junior astronauts and “report on their mission.”
