Niche released its 2027 Best Schools and Districts in America rankings on September 28, 2026, covering more than 93,000 public schools, 30,000 private schools, and 11,000 school districts across the United States. The Niche 2027 school rankings highlight the country’s top public and private high schools, school districts, and K-12 institutions.

The  Niche 2027 school rankings also introduce separate public and private categories, revised academic performance measures, and updated evaluation methods for boarding and online schools. These changes give families additional information when comparing schools and exploring college preparation, academic programs, and school environments.

What Changed in the 2027 Niche School Rankings?

The new categories expand the 2027 public school rankings and private school rankings, giving families more specific comparisons across different educational settings. Niche has also introduced dedicated rankings for boarding and online schools, reflecting the growing range of K-12 education options available to students.

Niche introduced separate public and private versions of four existing ranking categories:

• Best Schools for the Arts
• Most Diverse Schools
• Best College Prep Schools
• Best Teachers

The company also introduced dedicated methodologies for Best Boarding High Schools and Best Private Online High Schools. These rankings now consider factors specific to residential education and online instruction.

The changes allow families to compare schools within similar educational settings instead of relying on a single category for different types of schools.

How Does Niche’s 2027 School Ranking Methodology Work?

Niche’s 2027 school ranking methodology combines vetted federal and state education data, school-reported statistics, college information, and more than three million reviews from students, parents, and teachers. The Niche school ranking criteria and the weight assigned to individual factors vary by category, allowing the platform to evaluate public schools, private schools, and school districts using measures suited to each group.

For 2027, Niche updated several data sources and introduced additional evaluation factors.

Updated Academic Performance Data

For selected public school rankings, Niche now uses state-level assessment proficiency data instead of federal sources. The update applies to:

• Best Public High Schools
• Best Public Elementary and Middle Schools
• Best High Schools for STEM
• School District rankings

According to Niche, the change is intended to reflect more current measures of student academic performance. It applies to the specified rankings and does not mean that every factor in the rankings now comes exclusively from state data.

New Factors in Private School Rankings

The School Accreditation Score was added to selected private school rankings, including Best Private High Schools, Private High School Academics, Best Boarding High Schools, Best Private Online High Schools, and Private K-8.

The College-Level Coursework Index applies to Private High School Academics and Best College Prep Private High Schools. It replaces AP-only measures to recognize other college-equivalent courses, including International Baccalaureate and dual enrollment.

Niche also added teacher retention to Best Private School Teachers and updated private school diversity measures to better reflect the locations and income levels students come from.

Greater Focus on Verified College Enrollment

Niche continues to shift weight in selected rankings from Top Popular Colleges, which reflects aspirational college destinations, toward Top Enrolled Colleges, which uses verified enrollment data from the National Student Clearinghouse. 

The change gives selected rankings more emphasis on where students actually enroll rather than only on colleges they hope to attend.
