Oxford Area High School in Chester County, Pennsylvania, closed to students and staff on Friday, October 9, after the school community reported a confirmed Measles case. The Oxford Area High School Measles case prompted staff immunity checks directed by the Chester County Health Department (CCHD).

The October 9, 2026, letter from Oxford Area School District Superintendent David A. Woods to families about the measles-related closure at Oxford Area High School.  However, the health department directed the district to verify immunity documentation for every staff member working in the high school building. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection had been completed.

The letter from Oxford Area School District does not identify the infected person, confirm where the infection occurred, or state how many people may have been exposed. The CCHD is leading the public health response and will contact people identified as exposed. The Oxford Area High School Measles case remains under investigation.

Why Did Oxford Area High School Close?

The Oxford Area High School Measles case led to a closure for staff immunity checks. However, the closure does not confirm that transmission occurred inside the school.

The Oxford Area School District is verifying Measles immunity documentation for staff working in the building. Although it has Measles vaccination records for student attendance for students, staff documentation still needs verification. The Oxford Measles case does not prove other students or staff are infected.

What Is the District Doing About the Pennsylvania Measles Cases?

The Oxford Area School District Measles update covers the Measles case and identifies four response measures:

  • Staff records: The District is verifying immunity documentation.
  • Cleaning: Enhanced cleaning and disinfection are complete.
  • Exposure investigation: The Chester County Health Department Measles exposure investigation is being led by public health officials.
  • Direct communication: People identified as exposed will receive instructions.

District Superintendent David A. Woods said the district was following health guidance. The Oxford Area High School Measles case has no confirmed reopening date.

Who Must Stay Out of School After Measles Exposure?

The Oxford Area School District’s letter says people who are unvaccinated or cannot provide proof of vaccination must stay away from school and school functions for 21 days. It does not fully explain how this restriction applies in every exposure circumstance.

The 21-day school exclusion after Measles exposure should be clarified with the district or CCHD. Families should follow individual instructions and ask health officials what documentation or precautions are required.

What Are the Symptoms of Measles?

Measles symptoms in children usually begin 7 to 14 days after exposure, but can appear up to 21 days later. Early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A rash generally develops three to five days after the first symptoms.

Measles can cause complications, including pneumonia and brain inflammation. Infants, young children, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems may face greater risks.

Measles spreads through the air, and the virus can remain infectious for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area. Up to nine out of 10 susceptible close contacts may become infected.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine are about 97% effective against measles. MMR vaccine effectiveness against Measles is high, but people concerned about exposure should contact a healthcare professional or public health official.

What Do Pennsylvania’s Measles Outbreak Figures Show?

The Oxford Area High School Measles case comes amid a wider public health concern. On October 7, 2026, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 1,078 cases across 41 counties, 207 hospitalizations, and five measles-associated deaths. Four reported cases involved vaccinated people.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) said more than 40 of the 74 cases added in its October 7, 2026, update involved people who had been ill for over two weeks and were no longer contagious. These Pennsylvania Measles outbreak cases in 2026 provide statewide context, but do not establish a connection to Oxford.

What Parents Should Do After Possible Measles Exposure?

Parents should follow public health guidance. The Oxford Measles case does not mean every student was exposed; families should rely on direct instructions from officials.

Parents and caregivers should:

  • Monitor updates from the Oxford Area School District and the Chester County Health Department.
  • Contact a healthcare professional if they believe their child may have been exposed.
  • Watch for fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, or a rash.
  • Call a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or hospital if Measles symptoms develop, so staff can take precautions.
  • Keep vaccination records available and follow instructions about monitoring or school attendance.

Contact Pennsylvania’s health department on the hotline 877-724-3258.

What Happens Next for Oxford Area High School?

The Oxford Area High School Measles case has prompted a temporary closure for staff immunity checks while health officials assess possible exposure. The district has not confirmed where the infection occurred, how many people were exposed, or when classes will resume. Families should follow official updates and individual public health instructions.
