Dr. Angel Cabrera, president of Georgia Tech, has been named the incoming President and CEO of the Aspen Institute, selecting a higher education leader known for expanding research, innovation, and public impact.

Dr. Cabrera will officially take over on November 1, 2026, following Dan Porterfield’s departure after eight years in the role. Aspen’s Board of Trustees approved the decision unanimously after a national search that began in fall 2025.

Board Chair Margot Pritzker called Cabrera a “visionary leader” with the ability to guide institutions through change while bringing people together across differences.

The appointment comes as the Aspen Institute expands its work in leadership, education, democracy, and civic dialogue, making the choice of its next leader especially significant.

Who Is Dr. Angel Cabrera?

Dr. Angel Cabrera is the new CEO of the Aspen Institute, an education leader known for expanding access to learning and leading major universities in the United States and Europe.

Born in Spain, Cabrera moved to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar and later earned graduate degrees from Georgia Tech, the same university he would eventually lead.

Georgia Tech transformed my life, first as a student and later as president,” Cabrera said after the Aspen announcement.

Before returning to Georgia Tech in 2019, Cabrera served as president of George Mason University, led the Thunderbird School of Global Management, and served as dean of IE Business School in Madrid.

In 2012, Cabrera became the first person born in Spain to serve as president of a major American university.

The World Economic Forum later named him a Young Global Leader, while the Carnegie Corporation of New York recognized him as a Great Immigrant. He has also been featured among influential education leaders for advancing innovation and institutional growth.

Beyond university leadership, Cabrera helped launch the United Nations-backed Principles for Responsible Management Education, now used by more than 800 institutions worldwide.

Cabrera’s leadership at Georgia Tech helps explain why Aspen selected him for one of its most important leadership roles.

Key achievements during Cabrera’s time at Georgia Tech include:

Former University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue praised Cabrera’s leadership, saying he helped strengthen Georgia Tech’s role as “a driving force for innovation and economic opportunity.”

Why Did the Aspen Institute Choose Dr. Cabrera?

Aspen Institute leaders suggest the decision came down to both experience and timing.

Aspen’s outgoing president and CEO, Dan Porterfield, called Cabrera “an exceptional choice” with “an instinct for building community” and a deep understanding of “what the Aspen Institute is and why it matters.”

Cabrera’s long relationship with Aspen likely strengthened the board’s confidence. He joined the Institute as a Henry Crown Fellow in 2008, giving him years of involvement with the organization before becoming its next leader.

“I know firsthand the power of this organization to change how people see themselves, each other, and what they can do together,” Cabrera said after the announcement.

What Is the Aspen Institute?

The Aspen Institute is a nonprofit focused on leadership, education, democracy, and civic dialogue. Known for programs like the Aspen Ideas Festival and leadership fellowships, it works with leaders across sectors to address major social and global challenges.

What Happens Next?

Dr. Cabrera will remain at Georgia Tech through October 2026 to support the leadership transition.

Aspen CEO Dan Porterfield will step down on July 2, 2026, to lead the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Maria Acebal will serve as interim President and CEO until Cabrera officially begins the role on November 1, 2026.

For Cabrera, the move marks a shift from leading one of America’s top research universities to guiding one of the world’s most influential nonprofit organizations focused on leadership and public dialogue.
