The University of Texas at Austin has established UT Austin’s New University College and appointed Devin Stauffer as its inaugural dean to oversee the continued development of the university’s redesigned undergraduate core curriculum. UT Austin President Jim Davis announced the development on October 21, 2026, during his annual State of the University address.

Inaugural Dean Devin Stauffer will lead University College, which will oversee the implementation of the revised curriculum across three areas such as arts and humanities, social sciences, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The appointment of Devin Stauffer marks a new stage in UT Austin’s effort to reshape general education. UT Austin is now working on course development, faculty recruitment, and the implementation process ahead of the planned rollout.

Story Behind UT Austin’s New University College Announcement

UT Austin established UT Austin’s New University College to oversee the development and implementation of its redesigned core curriculum. The curriculum review began in fall 2025, marking the university’s first comprehensive review in more than 20 years.

President Davis said,

“The new core is clear, focused, and rigorous, a foundational education. It gives every Longhorn a common learning experience and builds judgment and character.”

The revised framework of UT Austin’s curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, communication, evidence-based reasoning, and understanding scientific and technological developments alongside specialized knowledge.

Led by Inaugural Dean Devin Stauffer, UT Austin’s New University College will guide the rollout of the new courses across the university.

Who Is Devin Stauffer, UT Austin’s New University College’s Inaugural Dean?

Devin Stauffer is a professor of government at UT Austin and chaired the faculty task force responsible for reviewing the UT Austin University’s core curriculum and recommending changes.

Devin’s appointment places the task force’s work and the implementation of its recommendations under the leadership of UT Austin’s New University College. The university has identified Stauffer as University College’s inaugural dean, although the announcement does not provide a detailed breakdown of the college’s staffing, budget, or operational structure.

Devin’s previous role in the curriculum of UT Austin review provides relevant academic context for the appointment. The next stage will involve translating the proposed framework into courses that meet university and state requirements.

How Will UT Austin’s New Core Curriculum Change Degree Requirements?

UT Austin’s redesigned core curriculum will reduce general education requirements from 42 to 36 credit hours and organize them into three broad areas. All undergraduate students must complete a core curriculum alongside the requirements for their chosen degree.

The proposed distribution is:

Curriculum areaRequired credit hours
Arts and Humanities15
Social Sciences9
STEM12
Total36

The arts and humanities component of UT Austin includes areas such as Western civilization, U.S. history, literature, culture, and the arts. Social sciences cover subjects including American politics, world politics and cultures, and the foundations of social science.

The STEM component of UT Austin includes scientific ideas, computer science and artificial intelligence, natural science and engineering, and mathematics, statistics and data science.

UT Austin says its proposed core curriculum will provide a balanced education across the arts and humanities, social sciences, and STEM while reducing required core credits from 42 to 36. The six-credit reduction is intended to give students more flexibility to choose electives and specialize in their fields.

When Will UT Austin Implement the New Core Curriculum?

UT Austin plans to introduce the redesigned core curriculum in stages, allowing faculty and academic departments time to develop courses and prepare for the transition.

UT Austin’s published implementation timeline identifies three key stages:

  • 2026-2027: Developing courses, engaging faculty, recruiting additional instructors where needed, and reviewing existing core offerings.
  • 2027-2028: Beginning of piloting courses under the new curriculum while existing core courses continue to be offered.
  • 2028-2029: Beginning of full implementation of the new core curriculum requirements across core courses.

The UT Austin University also notes that the transition must align with changing state requirements, and full implementation in coordination with those requirements may extend to 2029 or later.

Students already enrolled under the previous curriculum of UT Austin will not be required to complete additional courses solely to meet the new core requirements. The university says the new curriculum will become mandatory for incoming students when it takes effect.

What Does UT Austin’s New University College Mean for Students?

UT Austin’s New University College will oversee the development and implementation of the UT Austin core curriculum, which combines general education with students’ specialized degree requirements. The revised framework of UT Austin’s curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, communication, scientific understanding, and learning across disciplines.

The rollout will require course development, faculty participation, and coordination with state and university requirements. Although details of the college’s internal operations remain unclear, Inaugural Dean Devin Stauffer will lead the new college as UT Austin prepares to pilot courses in 2027-2028 and begin broader implementation in 2028-2029.
