But what are your career options once you’re qualified as a teacher? Where can you go beyond the classroom? This article will explore some career options in the education sector, and you’ll learn where teaching can take your career.

Career Options in Education

If you’re interested in pursuing a career in education, here are some of the roles you can consider:

Educational Consultant

A great career option for teachers, beyond the classroom, is that of an educational consultant.

This role provides expert advice and educational guidance to students, parents, schools, and other educational institutions to help improve academic outcomes, as well as help staff and students navigate complex educational systems. An educational consultant may assist students in choosing the right schools, colleges, or courses based on their individual goals, strengths, and interests. For families, this role often helps with college application processes, advising on test preparation strategies, and educational interview coaching.

When working closely with schools or institutions, an educational consultant can advise on curriculum development, help with teacher training, or work with schools on educational tech implementation. Many educational consultants also specialize in working closely with students who have learning differences, neurodivergence, or unique educational needs, offering support and tailored learning plans.

This role often requires staying current with changes in education policy, the curriculum, college admission trends, and teaching best practices. Ultimately, the goal of an educational consultant’s role is to empower learners and educators to make informed decisions and reach their full potential within the education system.

Assistant Principal

Another viable career in education is an assistant principal.

This role is of an educational administrator who oversees activities within a junior, middle, or high school. They can also be called vice principals. Regardless of the name, these roles work closely with classroom teachers and school board members to meet state and federal regulatory requirements for schools.

Their responsibility is to build a safe and productive learning environment for students, ensuring that school is fun, engaging, and pleasant to attend. They may also be responsible for wellbeing and inclusion initiatives.

Principal

A principal is an educational leader whose responsibility is to manage and oversee the operations of a grade school, such as primary, middle, or high school. Also called headmasters or headteachers, principals are the immediate line supervisors of teachers, and they usually work closely with other administrative staff to ensure the smooth running of the school.

Principals also craft and develop school regulations and policies that cover dress codes, academic performance, and discipline. This is an important role, as principals also represent the school to the public. They also decide where to allocate financial resources and track budgets and expenditures, keeping the school in the black. If you want to become a school principal, you should consider further qualifications, such as an EdD in educational leadership online

Tutor

Another career option for those with educational qualifications is that of a tutor.

A tutor works closely – either one-on-one or in small groups –  with students of all ages to help them better understand the curriculum, improve academic performance, and build more confidence in their learning abilities.

Unlike classroom teachers, tutors can provide personalized instruction tailored to a student’s learning pace, strengths, and areas where they struggle. They will often review class materials, assist with homework, and prepare students for tests or assessments, using different teaching methods to suit students’ individual learning styles. Tutors can also identify gaps in student understanding and assist them to learn foundational concepts when necessary.

Beyond academic outcomes, a tutor can help foster effective study habits in students, help them develop time management skills, and help with motivation and drive. In some cases, tutors can support students with learning challenges, including adapting lessons to meet diverse needs, such as learning disabilities.

Child Care Director

If you gain an educational qualification, you could consider a career as a child care director. In this role, you’ll oversee the daily operations of a child care center, making sure the environment is safe for young children and nurturing and positive for early childhood development.

A child care director is responsible for managing child care staff, including all aspects of hiring, training, and evaluating educators and caregivers to maintain the best standards of care and education.

You will also develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum activities that support young children’s learning and growth while ensuring full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations around health, safety, and education.

A child care director also has administrative duties such as tracking budgets, record-keeping, and enrollment management. They often communicate with parents to address any concerns, provide updates on kids’ learning, and focus on building trust within the community.

The leadership shown in this role helps establish a consistent, high-quality child care experience that supports the developmental needs of young children during their critical early years.
